Three decades of honest packaging.
From polythene pioneer to paper packaging partner.
King Plastic Industries Ltd was founded in 1995, as a family business that was a manufacturer of polythene bags and sheeting for the domestic and export markets. KPIL was one of the leading manufacturers of Monolayer polythene in East and Central Africa and had a great reputation for premium quality across the region. Notably, many of its brands had established dominant positions in markets across Africa. By 2009, it was a prominent player in the industry with a team of close to 500 permanent staff to cater to the growing demand.
However, the country-wide plastic bag ban that was established on August 28th, 2017 significantly impacted the company, causing KPIL to lose 90% of its product range and being forced to lay off 450 employees. The Directors' objective was to invest in eco-friendly sustainable packaging to protect the environment as well as to bring back as many employees as they could, whose livelihoods depended on the company's success and growth.
King Plastic Industries Ltd then began diversifying into eco-friendly packaging solutions. With this goal in mind, we were the first to air freight paper-bag-making machinery from Germany to cater for the domestic grocery bag void left by the polythene ban and rebuild the company. By 2023 the company had brought back 400 employees.
